Brass threaded inserts are used for easy removal of the artistic top piece. Many artists make the tops and let people choose which base they like: stainless Whiskey, brass Whiskey, Niles bottle opener, Niles Tab lifter, etc.
The inside thread is 3/8″ x 16 tpi that will match all of my products. Drill a 31/64″ hole 3/4″ deep. You can either use a rubber mallet or put a cone live center in the tailstock and turn the wheel to push the insert into the wood. These inserts and the Stainless inserts we make, solve the problem of tear out of the threads in certain wood species. You still may have to use glue with some soft or punky woods. *Note: The brass inserts are imported and you may experience not being able to thread a stopper or opener all the way in; use a 3/8″ x 16 tpi tap, run it down the insert to clean the threading all the way through.
